What happens when the moon becomes a language?

Wherever you go, there you are, and there is the moon in the night sky, looking back at you. For some, this is beautiful. For others, haunting.

In Dialog (Dialogue), Elisabeth Ajtay transforms this universal experience into a visual language. Through photography, collage, movement, and abstraction, she explores how we communicate, how we change, and how we remain connected despite the things that separate us.

This is art that does not simply ask to be viewed.

It asks to be interpreted.

The Moon Alphabet

A Language Written in Light

The foundation of Dialog (Dialogue) began with Ajtay’s Moon Alphabet—an exploration of language created using the light of the moon.

The moon becomes both subject and tool: a universal symbol of reflection, yet a singular presence in the night sky.

Through her camera lens, moonlight is captured, twisted and transformed into shapes resembling the strokes of a painter.

The resulting characters feel simultaneously familiar and abstract.

Just like language itself.

I inverted the process of “writing with light” (see Picasso). Normally, you would move the light source in front of the lens. But the moon is fixed, so I had to move the camera instead, making tiny movements that would fit within the size of a 35mm film frame. In this case, the chip.

Ajtay turns that contradiction into visual form.

From Alphabet to Dialogue

When Individual Letters Begin to Move

The Moon Alphabet becomes something larger in Dialog (Dialogue).

Ajtay takes these individual characters and brings them together, creating compositions that appear to move across the surface of the work.

Letters are inverted, flipped, torn apart and relocated.

Some cascade gracefully across the image, resembling an organised dance.

Others appear disrupted—suggesting displacement, rupture and the unpredictable movement of people.

The result is a visual conversation between order and disruption, connection and separation, movement and stillness.
